documented tomato varieties in
North America
prior to the Civil War. Fearing Burr in Field and Garden Vegetables
of America (1865) wrote "From the time of the introduction of

red heavily lobed or scalloped fruit are flat and usually measure 2½-3"
wide. The Early Large Red tomato is best used for cooking. A very
