Wicklow Way Farm 2014 CSA |
What is Community Supported Agriculture: Also, commonly known as Community Shared Agriculture or CSA for short. Customers, or shareholders, purchase in advance, from a local farmer, a weekly box of produce for the season. Most often the farmers are certified organic but some may be growing ecologically and sustainably without being certified. While some farmers are using CSA merely as a marketing tool, most often it includes a more significant purpose, reflecting the farmer’s values related to small farms, environmental concerns, sustainability, the local community, and organic production techniques. |
How it works: Our program will run for 17 weeks. The program runs from mid June to mid October. The cost for the 2014 season is $575 a share. (If you-sign up and pay in full by March 15, 2014 your cost will be $550.) Shares earlier in the season may be supplemented by other goodies from our farm kitchen. A deposit of $100 is required at the time of application and the balance is due, by post-dated cheque, for May 1st .

The Wicklow Way advantage: We enjoy food. Really enjoy. Food is a major component of our life and we love to share that with you. We do not just grow produce, we live with it, we cook with it, we savour it. Food is not just a fuel, it is the starting point of a celebration. We will share that celebration with you. As a professional chef for most of her career, Elaina is familiar with excellent produce and she knows what to look for and what to do with it. In her weekly CSA newsletter she will share that knowledge and passion with you along with recipes to help you appreciate the flavours of the season. It's like receiving a weekly cooking class in a box. (Here's an example of a newsletter.) When you pick up your box we love to talk with you further and share recipes and ideas of what to look for and what to do with your box contents. |
The Bread option: CSA shareholders can order our artisan breads on a weekly basis. Each week there will be two to three different varieties of bread to choose from. Prices range from $5 to $8 a loaf depending on the variety. All of our ingredients are local and certified organic where possible. We use only sourdough starter and no commercial yeast.
Grass Only Beef option: On a monthly basis we will be offering to our CSA customers grass fed, grass finished beef packages from our friends at Kingsholm Farms. We have known them for many years now and they are fabulous at raising their Shaver cattle on grass and hay. Visit their website and read about how they accomplish this and you'll see between the lines how much they love their animals. |
Distribution Locations: Distribution will be at a number of locations each week. You will be asked on your application where you wish to pick up your box of produce. If you wish to change your location of pick-up on occasion please let us know at least 2 days in advance. This avoids confusion and waste.
If you are unable to pick up your vegetable basket we encourage you to send someone in your place. Missed baskets can be picked up at the farm the day after the initial distribution. We will try our best to keep the produce stored in a cool location though we cannot guarantee the condition of the vegetables, as our fridge space on farm is limited. |
