Farmers Growing Farmers

Working a market garden farm is labour intensive. We have increased our cultivated acres from three to five acres this year. For the 2012 season we are once again bringing on interns to help with the work. Interns work with us for four to eight months learning the details of running a farm in exchange for their labour. Their aspiration is to take this knowledge and apply it to their own farm or garden in the future.

If you are interested in interning at Wicklow Way, you can see the job description on the CRAFT Kawartha site

We are currently interviewing candidates for the 2012 season and we will introduce you to them later in the spring.

Bob Garthson, Farm Mentor

Our good friend Bob Garthson, a retired schoolteacher, is our farm mentor.  Bob has been farming since the age of twelve and was the first farmer that Elaina met when she came to Northumberland to work as a chef.  She went to pick up some produce for the kitchen and three hours later was still in the garden talking and learning.  Bob is scaling back his own operation again this year to spend more time consulting and perhaps even share some weekends at the cottage with his wife Carol.  To get his “fix” Bob will be working with us, off and on, at Wicklow Way Farm.
